Bonnington Gallery

Since 1843: In the Making

This exhibition was by various artists at Bonnington Gallery, Nottingham. It was an exhibition which celebrated 170 years of continuous creativity within this gallery. The work was presented in the style of the White Cube Gallery incorporating various types of art works including, video, installation, painting, and sculpture. The mixture of contemporary and traditional were linked together by the style of presentation. I think it is important that however different the artwork there is a subtle link through the display of the exhibition.

Artists involved in the exhibition:

  • Urban Artist- Jon Burgerman.
  • Turner Prize Winner- Simon Starling.
  • Artist Duo - Tim Noble and Sue Webster.
  • Photographer - Andy Earl.
  • Film Director - Jonathon Glazer.
  • Knitwear Designer - Motohiro Tanji.
  • Actor and Comedian - Paul Kaye.
  • Sculptor - Wolfgang Buttress.
  • Landscape Designer - Sarah Price.
  • Paper Cut Artist - Rob Ryan.
  • Visual Artist - Lucy Orta.

Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery

 26th January 2014

Today I visited an exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary by artist Marvin Gaye Chetwynd in galleries 3 and 4. The majority of Chetwynds work is based a interactive performance pieces however on the dates when there is no scheduled performance the viewers are free to wander around the gallery to view that various artworks. The majority of the sculptures and the installations began as costumes and handmade puppets which have since been developed to participate in these impressive performances. Chetwynd is influenced by a number of various historic performances such as carnivals, political demonstrations and drag acts. Her work incorporates many different social political issues too, sci-fi, the 60's, folk tradition, debt, gender politics and literature by authors such as Milton and Dickens, this therefore makes her work very diverse. The image below shows the Cat Bus which was inspired by the 1988 Japanese film My Neighbour Totoro.

A Tax Heaven Run By Women, Cat Bus

The images above show the exhibition without the performance piece in flow. However despite this the exhibition still provides the viewer with an interactive experience i.e there are numerous bean bags along with the videos playing on the numerous televisions. This exhibition is a very contemporary and abstract piece which makes use of the floor space rather than using any of the wall which is also what we plan to achieve within our exhibition. The installation seems to be discarded over the floor space which means the viewer has to decipher their way around the various objects this means the exhibition has the viewers full attention as they are aware of the trip hazard. This exhibition has been a great one to look at in relation to the exhibition our group has planned as it is extremely unorthodox.

The Louvre

I visited the Musée du Louvre on the 20th December 2013, as the gallery is so vast I did not have the opportunity to visit each individual temporary exhibition as well as the traditional galleries. However I did get the opportunity to visit the following exhibitions.

 Living Rooms

This contemporary exhibition by Robert Wilson entitled 'Living Rooms' is exhibited between November 14th 2013 and February 17th 2014 at the Louvre in Paris. The name Living Rooms derived from the idea of transporting both his living and working space to the musuem all the way from the Unites States. As I walked around the exhibition I noticed there was such a wide range of types or art including that of period furniture, Chinese ceramics, contemporary paintings and photographs which seemed to form a collection in itself. I then discovered that Wilson has collected these various pieces over the duration of his career and they form the foundation for his inspiration.  This layout of this exhibition seems to explore the artist himself rather than the work as the viewer becomes interested in the ideology behind the chosen pieces and the assemble of them. This exhibition reflects Wilson's daily surroundings and how he wanted to portray his inspiration to society. This exhibition makes use of many different display techniques. It incorporates the use of plinths and suspending work. The walls are painted in a tone of grey which breaks away from the conventional white cube style it also compliments the various pieces of art work which are hung from the wall in an unorthodox manner. I really like the idea of using shelves within the exhibition as it also reflects the title of the show. I think this is an important element to reflect the shows concept within the presentation of the exhibition, and this is something that our group have tried to achieve within our show.

Traditional Galleries

I noticed whilst exploring the Louvre that many of the traditional paintings by artists such as Ingres, Constable, Gainsborough and Borghèse were displayed in these ornate, historic corridors and rooms in large frames suspended by wire. The first image depicts a beautifully decorated room filled with golden sculptures and delicately painted walls and the ceiling. This room consisted of large scale paintings and glass cabinets filled with precious jewels and sculptures. I love this traditional style and how the artwork resembles that of the architecture and decoration of the building, this style could be seen as the white cube of our time. The second image shows these traditional paintings hung on a much blanker canvas, this stops the viewer from being distracted by the room and merely focuses on the paintings themselves. Both of these above images show a very different style of curation and display, however each work very well in portraying the pieces of artwork to their best ability.

First Draft Press Release-Context

Here is the context of our first draft for the press release. It incorporates all of the vital information such as the artists participating, the groups names, the title, concept, context. I think it is an excellent portrayal of our exhibition and will give the viewer the perfect insight into what we are trying to achieve within our exhibition. However I do think that the date and artists would work better at the beginning just to give the viewer the main details initially as these are perhaps the most important elements of the press release.

Press Release

Define: Ethereal

- 1.extremely delicate and light in a way that seems not to be of this world.

 - "her ethereal beauty"

- 2.CHEMISTRY (of a solution) having diethyl ether as a solvent.

-"sodium is dissolved in ethereal solutions of aromatic ketones"

Dusk is falling,
and the inner world is
gathering dust, as reality
passes by. A protective atmosphere
presides over the grand structure before you;
a sleeping giant. Through the Ether, you see a silhouette
rise through the veil; seemingly impassable. A gap reveals itself
to you, and you enter. Lights beckon, and out of the gloom,
unusual treasures come into focus, as if only for you. The
thread of time is distant from your mind as you spend what feels
like hours in the space of your own thoughts and memories. A ripple
of material. A pool of crystallised, glittering, unknown depths.
A bird watches you. You think you are alone. Shadows on the wall
Are just your own. But the sound is not you... The Collective
are proud to reveal ‘Through the Ether’, a show displaying the
beautiful, unusual and dreamlike state of mind that the artist makes
physical. Work on show ranges from the most delicate and otherworldly of
dreams, to the most chemical, textural of realities, in a space purpose-built. Place one foot in front of the other and step into the world of the Ethereal.

Press Release

A press release is a written article aimed at the viewers that attend the exhibition. These are typically advertised in magazines, flyers and newspapers. The aim is to attract the people to the exhibition and give a brief explanation into the concept and context of the show. Julia has offered to write the press release with input from the rest of the group whilst Anna, Emma and Megan are going to design the final draft.

 Example of a Press Release

This press release is from a recent exhibition that I visited at the Ikon Gallery in January. It is quite a basic and simple design with one bold colour which highlights the Gallery. The context of the press release provides all the vital information i.e artists background, dates, concepts and themes. However I think the design would work better with a slightly more interesting layout, perhaps a soft background just to make the piece as a whole more visually exciting. I think this is something that should be considered when writing our press release.

Risk Assesment

Following our last lecture we have decided to begin our risk assessment, which Faith has kindly volunteered to complete. The first step in the risk assessment is to identify the possible risks, i.e cable, lights, etc. We then need evaluate the risk and record the findings in order to pass on to our tutor to agree and complete the health and safety form for the exhibition. We will need to consider every possible risk to the viewers in order to create a safe environment.

Display Strategies

Plinths -

Above is an image from The universal addressability of dumb things by Mark Leckey at Nottingham Contemporary Gallery.

Kafou at Nottingham Contemporary, sculptures by Pierrot Barra, Gallery 3.
http://www.designweek.co.uk/whats-on/haiti-art-and-vodou/3035448.article

This image shows the exhibition of Kafou, Haiti, Art and Vodou by Pierrot Barra again at Nottingham Contemporary Gallery in 2012 to 2013.

Both of these above exhibitions combine the use of plinths to exhibit their work. The first image portrays a blank canvas painted in a vivid green which contrasts against the artwork on display. We plan to paint our plinths all in which again at different heights and sizes similar to that of the first image. The second image displays a plinth joint together on different levels in a wooden effect. This relates to our idea of the 'island' of plinths.

Suspending Work-

http://moodle.bcu.ac.uk/biad/course/view.php?id=947

This Exhibition above shows The Collective by Irwin. It explores how to suspend work and in the case, people. To suspend work we can use fishing wire from one side to the other, however we have to be mindful of weight of the artwork.

Hanging Work-

Below is an exhibition called The dream and the promise by artist Aleksandre Mir in Nottingham Contemporary Gallery. This is a series of 30 various sized paintings all hung at different heights. It is very important at looking into the height when hanging the pieces of artwork. Mid height is the best as most people can comfortably engage with the work.
