Adventures in the White Cube

The White Cube gallery space is a contemporary conventional design which incorporates a post-minimalist style within many modern art galleries today. Essentially it is a completely blank canvas for artists to exhibit there work on. Some may say that this allows the viewer to completely focus on the artwork giving the pieces a timeless quality whereas some argue that it lacks individuality and makes the artwork seem cold and becomes a product rather than a piece to be savored and appreciated.

 Exhibitions:

Open Cube, 2013 curated by Adriano Pedrosa at the White Cube Gallery, Masons Yard. Pedrosa had to choose a number of artists to fill this exhibition. He chose to base his concept on Brian O'Doherty's - 'The Ideology of the Gallery Space' and challenged the identity of a White Cube gallery space as a space and organisation. This model has been adopted throughout the world a minimalist approach and intrusion.

Lawrence Weiner at the Marian Goodman Gallery 2007. This artists work is very conscious of space he uses lots of texts and cut outs. His work considers the space of the white cube rather than just being hung in a gallery. The space is essential for Weiners work rather than the other way around.

Yves Klein- The Void Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, 1961. Klein is a french artist, for this exhibition he removed every detail from the gallery space. The opening event he worked with colour he had a real affinity with the colour blue and this was often his main source of inspiration. Within this piece the empty space is the artwork.

Mel Bochner - Measurements by 1969 was in response to a piece called The Full by Kleins friend. This piece uses the gallery space and looks at the measurements of the gallery rooms. It focuses on conceptualism the idea of work is less about the material and more a focus on the concept behind it.

William Anastasi, West Wall, Dwan Main Gallery, US, 1967. This piece is a screen print which is a replica of the wall that it is hung on the wall itself. This focuses on minimalist and architectural design such as plugs and grills, etc.

Micheal Asher, Untitled 1974, Claire Copley Gallery. Removed wall to reveal process behind scenes in a gallery. The administration of a gallery space becomes an art work in its own right. Again this is similar to the concept of both Bochner and Klein.

Yann Saréndour - Inside the Cube is a seminal text which is an important publication for artists throughout history it explores the idea of the white cube space excluding the outside world. Another key publication is by O'Doherty in which he equates the white cube space with churches, courtrooms and laboratories. Sanctuary for aesthetic of art which merely acts as a container.

Research into the white cube gallery space has portrayed that the majority of artists who choose to have their work exhibited in this space use the gallery as a basis for their work and revolve their art around the space rather than the conventional, traditional manner. I think the white cube space is more effective when it is filled with various pieces that compliment the space and this is something I will bear in mind when planning our exhibition.

Response to Written Extract...

During one of our lectures with Mona our group was given this short extract in order to decipher and conjure up ideas about the curation use of the White Cube Gallery. This extract by Brian O Doherty concludes that this gallery style is the perfect place to display art, however our group mainly opposed this. We discussed the idea that the clinical nature of the gallery has now become more focused on class and exclusiveness rather than focusing on a connection with the artwork itself. I most definitely prefer the idea of a traditional gallery as the work often feels like it has a link to the architecture within the building. Although depending on the artwork displayed, for example an extremely modern abstract piece of art would not fit in a traditional gallery but would suit this white cube style. However I think as a group we have decided against this orthodox style and wish to put our own twist onto our exhibition to make it completely unique and visually exciting.
