Solo Shows

A Solo Show/ Exhibition involves only one artists pieces of work, whether is be sculpture, painting, performance or any other type of art medium. A solo show often gives praise to the artist with great publicity and to document their achievements throughout their career.

Examples of Solo Shows:

Anderson009

Ikon Gallery primarily works with solo shows, this exhibition of Hurvin Andersons work entitled Reporting Back 2013. This show explored the artists ethnic background and the spread out curation and layout perhaps depicts how Anderson often felt segregated, this notion is also reflected in these large scale paintings.

Above is an image of The Upper Room, Chris Ofili -Victoria Miro Gallery, 2002. Artist Chris Ofili uses mythological and ethnic women and also directly references history by using elephant dung in his pieces to make them natural. The work is presents at floor level on small pedestals which keeps the presentation very particular and calculated.
Monika Grzymala was an artist in residency at the Chianti Gallery 2003. This polish born artists creates installations which she calls 'three-dimensional drawings'. Grzymalas work is curated in a class manner, it resembles that of an obstacle course in which the viewer has to maneuver their way around.

 Amikam Toren

Above is an image of the exhibition Armchair Paintings, Amikan Toren- the Ikon Gallery, 2003.His work is curated in a very unique style for example his work is exhibited in public spaces such as toilets . At the Ikon they were hung in the restaurant, the stairs and the toilets, this concept challenges conventional curation within art and questions placement for artwork. Toren buys cheap oil paintings and then intricately cuts back into them.

Journey to a Lower World , Marcus Coates 2004. This could be described as an animated piece because of the liveliness of the performance piece in which he performance to a small artist with a wearing a stags head- pictured above. This again is an unconventional way to curate an exhibition as it requires the viewers to follow the artist in order to see the artwork.

All of the above shows present work in very different ways but each curation and exhibition is tailored to suit the artwork that is bring presented. Another style of curation is to allow the public to curate the work the presents both peer esteem and instruction for painting, again a very unconventional curation technique as the audience decided the politics. Although our group will most probably decide on exhibiting a number of artists work, exploration of solo shows is still key as it presents new and unique concepts when presenting artwork.
