Artist Interview - Kerris Stirling

Description of Work

These pieces are sculptures made from wads of tights which are then filled with wadding and decorated with clay flowers and growths painted in various colours.

How it links to Ethereal

The work explores the themed of growth, diseases, and powerless humans. Kerris describes her work as having ethereal qualities and so again perfectly fits our theme for the exhibition.

Interview

Anna interviewed artist Kerris Stirling behind the concepts and context of her work.

1) What's the concept of your work?

My work is based all around the idea of disease and disease spreading. I've looked at how it spreads and how you have no control over it. Also looking more at bacteria and growth through her work.

2) Do you mind how your work is displayed?

I'm happy with any way you choose to display my work; it can be separated into the individual items, or displayed in smaller groups. There a little fragile, so if you drop them they will break but I am happy for them to be hung, or tacked softly to something for stability as some can not stand alone. Please tack or hang from the bottom of the objects though. They're made from tights stuffed with wadding, and then decorated with air dry clay, making them very light objects, increasing the ethereal quality especially if they can all be displayed separately to increase delicacy. I also asked her if she is happy for some of the small tight wadding objects to be placed in the foyer with some press releases to entice people to the show. She agreed to this happily but asked if we could put her name next to the pieces of work. Also she's happy with her name being on a wall plan where her work is instead of her name being on the plinth below her work etc, which is really good, as we don't want names/ plaques to distract from the pieces.
