Group Meeting

28th January 2014

Plinths

All of the artwork we have chosen will be set on the plinths or suspended above them, i.e the large threaded cube. At the minute we ideally are planning on having between 20 and 30 plinths as this will allow us enough space for the all of the artwork, however this will have to be worked into the budget. Dom and Liz have offered to scout the building for ready made plinths which we can repaint for our exhibition. We will also makes plinths individually to contribute to our exhibition. Another suggestion was to whether we would label the pieces on the plinths. I think printing a plan of the exhibition and placing on the wall would work better as it would label who's and what the artwork is without distracting from the piece itself.

Dimensions

We have now measured the room PS1 for dimensions needed for various elements of our exhibition. the dimensions are as follows:
  •  Height - 9ft 10 inches (3metres)
  • 24ft 9 inches (7.5metres) x 22ft 10 inches (6.7metres)
  • PS1

Material

After looking at the dimensions of the room we discussed how much fabric we would need for the space to create the marquee style that we would like to create. After research of material at the rag market voile fabric is about £1 per metre. We have worked out that we will need four long pieces  each of length about 10/12m. This would be plenty to create the 8 sided voile fabric structure this would allow us to hang the fabric from approximately 3 metres high and 6 metres for the length of the whole structure. We then discussed colour, the majority of the group were interested on focusing on only white to echo the theme of ethereal, however Megan and I suggested that one bold colour would be aesthetically pleasing and an asset to the exhibition, especially a dark purple as it has strong connotations with the darker side of ethereal and mystery which is also reflected in Riba Begums work. The bold colour would also shy away from the conventional white cube style which we are trying to avoid within our exhibition. I also suggested the idea of using fabric that has a shimmer factor so that the light will reflect off it which would work beautifully for Through the Ether. CREAMS, WHITES, DARK PURPLES. Megan Wellings has offered to buy the fabric from the rag market and will bring this in at our next group meeting. Biancas mother may also have 25metres of white fabric which can no be cut into sections, therefore this could be used to drape around the plinths, however this will be tested on the day.

Fishing Wire

We have decided that we will need roughly 100m of fishing wire to realistically create the grid from which the fabric will hang. This should create the organic shape we are aiming for. The fishing wire could be attached to the wall using either staple guns or nails. We also need fishing wire to suspend work this need to be good quality and be able to withhold a substantial weight, to ensure as a group we and the artists feel satisfied with hanging the work.

Lighting

We have previously discussed using lighting within our exhibition to our advantage including that of the equipment that is already within PS1. This meeting however we discussed in depth lighting that we could contribute to the exhibition. As we are not allowed to light candles we suggested the next best thing - fake candles, this will create an ambient atmosphere which will exaggerate our theme and artwork within the exhibition. Bianca has 8 small tea-lights which she will bring in and we will experiment with these on the day of installment. I still am keen on using fairy lights within the exhibition hidden behind the fabric to create shadows and highlights, I think this suits our theme perfectly. We have discussed the notion of using battery powered lights as then we do not have the health and safety risk of a trip hazard. This will again be experimented with on set up day.

Sound

We want to create a multi-sensory experience for our viewers when they attend our exhibition we already have visual and touch and therefore we want to add sound. We have decide to go with Biancas idea of the footsteps, this creates a disconcerting atmosphere which links in nicely to the concept of our exhibition. We will use speakers which will echo the sound around the room. Julias partner is able to record through a professional Dictaphone and then edit the sound so there is no background noise. This can then be played on a continuous loop. We will meet on Tuesday to record our footsteps.

Hannah and I are in the process of designing flyers and advertisements for the exhibition we will bring in hard copies of these to the meeting on Thursday and then a have a group vote for the finalized design. We will then order these first thing on Friday with next day delivery and so should receive them by Tuesday next week, when we can then distribute them to various campuses.

Food and Beverages

We have all decided it would be easier if we donate the cakes and bakes we make without taking out of the kitty as the budget is very tight. Various people have offered to make cakes for the private viewing. We discussed the idea of decorating our cakes so that they link to our exhibition however we decided this could look too inferior in relation to the theme. We will need cupcake stands for the cakes. We are also going to be serving wine and so we will buy plastic wine glasses and napkins for the private viewing this will be taken out of the budget.

Budget

We have each donated £10 to the exhibition which has formed a healthy budget of £150. We have then discussed how to distribute the money to various essentials as follows.
  • Wine for the private viewing -£45
  • Material - £50
  • Advertising - £20
  • Plinths - £20
  • Wine glasses, napkins etc - £5-£10

This forms a very tight budget, however we can always donate more if needs be to create our exhibition to the highest standard possible.
