Making Plinths

4th February 2014

Today we began the process of making a number of plinths for the exhibition. We only had a one hour slot in the wood workshop and so as this was our first attempt at making plinths we only managed to complete one plinth. Hannah, Alice, Megan, Faith and I attended the first workshop. We decided to make our first plinth approximately 2ft high, however this did not have to be specific as we want all the plinths within the exhibition to be of unsystematic sizes. We used one large piece of board and using two machines that only Rob the technician could use he cut the plinth into four equal pieces with 45 degree angled sides and also a lid for the plinth. Then we had to lay each section down flat and using masking tape layered to join together the pieces. This then has to be rubbed down in order for it to adjustable, next we glued each section together on the angles and joint the plinth to its final stage. We decided to leave the lid loose for now for presentation purposes, as we can always glue this on at a later stage. We then had to leave the plinth for 24 hours to allow the glue to dry. The next stage will to be to paint the plinth white and we will dedicate a day for this. The group will split into smaller groups to make the rest of the plinths for the exhibition.
